Introduction Compact system cameras pack DSLR image quality and lens flexibility into more pocketable packaging, but what if a regular CSC setup is still too bulky? Enter the NX mini. This lives up to its name by being the slimmest and lightest CSC to date and itâs also available with a pair of new, ultra-compact lenses. Choose from a pocket-friendly 9mm, f/ prime optic or a 9-27mm, f/ zoom lens incorporating OIS image stabilisation. Images are captured by a 1-inch, megapixel back-side illuminated CMOS sensor and the camera will also record RAW files, Full HD 1080p video and shoot at up to 6fps at full resolution. To ensure the NX mini gets maximum attention, it boasts a flip-up touch-sensitive monitor so youâll no longer have to guess your selfie compositions. Finally thereâs advanced Wi-Fi connectivity with NFC pairing, plus a free copy of Adobe Lightroom 5 to add even more value to the competitive ÂŁ400/$ for camera and 9mm lens. Ease of Use Proving that less can still be more, the Samsung NX miniâs thickness means it should slip into most pockets or handbags without issue. Other CSC bodies come close to matching Samsungâs sleekness, but where their compactness is often lost when you mount a dirty great lens on the front, the NX miniâs 9mm pancake lens adds only a protrusion and weighs just 31g. Of course if you want more focal length flexibility youâll need the 9-27mm zoom optic, which at makes the camera a little less pocketable, but still impressively small. Although the camera itself weighs just 158g, it doesnât feel fragile. The body may be predominantly plastic, but itâs surprisingly solid and the textured leather-look adds to the quality feel. The brushed metal top panel and buttons also add style without much weight, and if the plain white finish of our review sample doesnât fit your image, mint green, pink, brown and black versions are also available. The only downside of such sleek lines is a lack of a front finger grip and the slippery rear thumb rest. Anybody upgrading from a regular compact camera should get the hang of the NX miniâs controls pretty quickly. The rear panel has a typical selection of video record, playback, delete and mode buttons, as well as a directional dial. Up top is the shutter release and power button, and directly beside this is a dedicated control for accessing the cameraâs Wi-Fi connectivity. However as this is the same size as the power button and located just a centimetre away from it, itâs easy to mistake for the power button. Although the rear panel controls are well-spaced and easy to use, itâs a pity there isnât the convenience of a proper mode dial. Fortunately this is less problematic than it could be thanks to the Samsung NX miniâs touch-screen controls. These are pleasantly responsive and are usually quicker and more intuitive use than the physical buttons. Just tap the Fn Function button on screen to instantly access a pallet of essential shooting options. Tapping the screen to set your focus point is also just as easy and makes the transition from smartphone photography much slicker. Samsungâs experience in the smartphone sector also shines in the NX miniâs menu system. Where many of the more established camera brands make do with interfaces reminiscent of Windows 98, the NX mini is bang up to date with clear and attractive menus and large, colourful icons. Itâs more style than substance, but hey, thatâs a large part of this cameraâs appeal. Another major feature that should win it attention from the fashion-conscious is the screenâs flipping ability. Flick it up 180 degrees and hey presto, an instant view of your own grinning noggin. The design isnât as flexible as some as it wonât fold downward to help you compose high-level shots, but then it does have a different party piece. When youâre ready to snap that selfie, just wink at the screen and the cameraâs nifty face detection system automatically fires the shutter two seconds later. Fancy frills aside, the display itself is more mundane. Its 460k-dot resolution is adequate but not particularly crisp and although viewing angles are very good, youâll need to crank the screen brightness to the max when under sunlight, and even then itâs far from the brightest of monitors. In such situations youâre left to rely on the Samsung NX miniâs automatic matrix metering to ensure shots are accurately exposed, and whilst usually reliable, we found several occasions where up to a stop of positive exposure compensation was necessary to enhance some dull shots. Autofocussing is more dependable though, quickly and accurately locking on to a subject in good light and only slowing fractionally in darker conditions. But dim light can catch the NX mini out in other ways. The trade-off for having such a slim and light 9mm lens is that it doesnât incorporate any form of image stabilisation, hence itâs harder to shoot sharp shots in low light than you may expect. Using higher ISO settings helps matters, though this naturally comes at the expense of image quality. Fortunately the 9-27mm zoom lens does get Samsungâs Optical Image Stabilisation. One area where Samsung shows the competition a thing or two is wireless connectivity. Plenty of cameras sport conventional Wi-Fi to share your images to a smart device, but the NX miniâs Photo Beam feature lets you transfer photos by simply tapping the camera against your smartphone. Fancy sending photos automatically as you capture them? Autoshare will do exactly that, plus you can control the camera remotely and even using it as a baby monitor thatâll transmit a live video feed with alerts to your phone. Features like PhotoBeam do require an NFC-equipped smart device though, so be sure to check your phone or tabletâs spec to see if itâs got the tech. Something which anyone will be able to appreciate is the NX miniâs battery life. Youâd be forgiven for thinking a camera this svelte would have a similarly small power plant, but Samsung has managed to pack in a whopping 2330mAh-capacity rechargeable cell, giving roughly twice the juice of your average camera battery. That translates to a very impressive 650 shots-per-charge, and though this figure is based on using the 9mm fixed focal length lens, the 9-27mm zoom optic should only demand marginally more power. But whichever lens you use, you can rest easy knowing the NX mini will keep on shooting long after most of its rivals require a recharge. Finally, itâs worth mentioning that the NX mini isnât compatible out-of-the-box with normal NX Mount lenses. It uses a new, smaller NX M Mount system which will only accept the 9mm and 9-27mm NX mini lenses. Samsung has released an adaptor to allow regular NX lenses to mount to the NX mini, though itâs fairly pricey and also currently illusive in the UK. Image Quality All of the sample images in this review were taken using the megapixel SuperFine JPEG setting, which gives an average image size of around 8Mb. A big draw of compact system cameras is they tend to use larger sensors than typical compact cameras. The NX mini is no exception, however where many other Samsung NX cameras use large APS-C-sized sensors, the NX mini uses a considerably smaller 1-inch device. In theory a smaller sensor makes it more prone to image noise and less able to capture fine detail, but thankfully the NX mini doesn't fall too deep into such pitfalls. In good light and at lower ISO sensitivities images have vibrant colours with plenty of detail, though don't expect quite the same sharpness as an APS-C sensor can generate. ISO800 shots are almost as crisp, and even ISO1600 images maintain high levels of detail and eliminate colour speckling. ISO3200 sees fine details falling foul of noise reduction processing, but images are still very usable at this setting and it's only at ISO6400 that detail loss and blotchy colours become distracting. What's more likely to smear detail is the lack of image stabilisation in the 9mm lens. Although the camera will use higher sensor sensitivities to keep shutter speeds fast, without a sensor-shift stabilisation system built into the camera body you'll need to hold very steady indoors to avoid blurred shots from slight camera shake. The 9mm lens itself isn't a pin-sharp performer either, though corner sharpness is consistent with the centre of frame and it does a great job of avoiding chromatic aberration purple fringing in high contrast areas. The NX mini itself doesn't have an overly wide dynamic range, however its tendency to slightly underexpose some contrasty scenes does at least mean highlights are rarely blown and shadows can be lifted in post-production. Noise The NX mini has eight sensitivity settings available at full resolution, ranging between ISO160 and ISO12800. ISO 160 100% Crop ISO 200 100% Crop ISO 400 100% Crop ISO 800 100% Crop ISO 1600 100% Crop ISO 3200 100% Crop ISO 6400 100% Crop ISO 12800 100% Crop File Quality Seven quality options can be selected for recorded photos. Three JPEG compression settings â Super Fine, Fine and Normal â result in file sizes around 8MB, 5MB and respectively. You can also shoot RAW and have files around 20MB a piece, or use a combination of RAW with one of the three JPEG quality options. Sharpening Here are two 100% crops which have been Saved as Web - Quality 50 in Photoshop. The right-hand image has had some sharpening applied in Photoshop. The out-of-the camera images are a little soft at the default sharpening setting and benefit from some further sharpening in a program like Adobe Photoshop. You can also change the in-camera sharpening level. Original 100% Crop Sharpened 100% Crop Flash The camera's built-in flash includes seven modes Smart Flash which adapts to the amount of ambient lighting, Auto, Auto Red-eye, Fill in, Fill in Red, 1st curtain and 2nd curtain modes. Our testing showed the flash produces only minor vignetting with the 9mm lens from a distance of and successfully eliminates any trace of red-eye. If the GN4-rated internal flash doesn't pack enough punch, then the NX mini has a socket on its top panel which can accept the NX mini external flash which has a GN7 rating. Off - Wide Angle 9mm Fill-in - Wide Angle 9mm And here are some portrait shots. As you can see, neither the Fill-in or the Fill-in + Red-eye reduction settings caused any red-eye. This isn't a long exposure mode, though in our testing a relatively slow shutter speed of 1/8-second still meant a tripod was necessary to avoid camera shake when using the unstabilised 9mm lens. Enter the Smart mode, select Panorama', then press and hold the shutter whilst sweeping right, left, up or down. Unlike many cameras which force you to keep panning for at least 120 degrees, the NX mini will let you stop the pan wherever you like, although whatever the width, the end results are downsized to around 1050 vertical pixels. Its small size means you get a smaller than average sensor for a CSC, which in turn adversely affects image quality. Fortunately this isn't severely reduced and is certainly a major step up from a normal compact camera, but if you're a stickler for capturing every last detail and want crystal clear shots at high ISO settings, most Micro Four Thirds or APS-C-sized sensors will trump the NX mini. However it's easy to get hung up on outright image quality when in fact the NX mini's pocketable size will be far more important in the real world than pixel-perfect image quality. Decked out with the 9mm pancake lens, the NX mini is every bit as portable as a chubby compact camera, though of course you'll need to move about more to compensate for the lack of focal range. But it's the restricted lens choice that's currently the NX mini's biggest issue. Should the camera sell well then we'd hope Samsung will develop more compatible lenses, but as it stands there's no telephoto option and the 9mm lens' f/ maximum aperture is both small for a prime lens and indeed no better than the 9-27mm optic can achieve. Granted, the NX M mount adaptor lets regular NX-series lenses be used on the NX mini, but not without adding extra bulk, weight and expense. A lack of lens choice will undoubtedly concern established CSC and DSLR fans, but it's not a complete deal-breaker if you're used to the fixed focal length of a smartphone and can hold steady to compensate for the 9mm lens' lack of stabilisation. Plus, with megapixels on tap, cropping in on distant subjects partly addresses the need for a telephoto lens. Ultimately the NX mini is aimed at fashion-conscious, tech-savvy photographers wanting a noticeable boost image quality over a smartphone or compact camera without the bulk of a regular CSC or DSLR. In this respect the NX mini hits its mark, and once you factor the touch-screen control, fun features and great Wi-Fi connectivity; the NX mini stands an even better chance of winning over smartphone photographers than most of its rivals. The Samsung NX Mini $ with 9mm lens is one of the smallest mirrorless cameras on the market, and one of the more affordable. It uses the same 1-inch sensor size found in Nikon 1 mirrorless cameras and Sony's RX lineup of compact point-and-shoots, and packs 20-megapixels of resolution. When you add Wi-Fi and a tilting touch-screen display that flips all the way forward for selfies, you get a camera that's built for portability and image sharing. It's not a top-end performer like our Editors' Choice Sony Alpha 6000$ at Dell TechnologiesOpens in a new window, but certainly holds some appeal for more casual shooters looking for pocketability, affordability, and image quality that's beyond what a compact camera or smartphone can offer. Design and FeaturesThe NX Mini$ at AmazonOpens in a new window is slim at just by by inches HWD, and ounces without a lens. It's the slimmest mirrorless model on the market, especially when you consider just how compact the included 9mm f/ 24mm equivalent lens$ at AmazonOpens in a new window is, but it's not the absolute smallest. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GM1 at AmazonOpens in a new window by by inches, ounces isn't as wide or as tall, and squeezes a much larger Micro Four Thirds image sensor into that frame. Like the GM1, the NX Mini incorporates an electronic shutter system that can capture exposures as short as 1/16,000-second, but it omits the mechanical shutter option that the GM1 offers. Similar Products Samsung also sells the NX Mini in a kit with a 9-27mm 24-73mm equivalent f/ OIS zoom lens and an external flash for $550. The body does have a built-in flash, but it's small and doesn't put out as much power as an external unit. The flash connects to an expansion port on the top; there's no room for a standard hot shoe. Regardless of which kit you choose, the camera can be yours in chrome with your choice of white, brown, black, pink, or mint green leatherette. One result of the Mini's smaller sensor is the inability to create a really shallow depth of field as you can with other mirrorless cameras. Both lenses that are currently available for the system have rather narrow aperture, which compounds this. Even when focused close and shot at f/ you can't get a lot of background blur with the 9mm prime. Samsung doesn't offer any in-camera blur modes to get around this, as Pentax does with its Q7$ at AmazonOpens in a new window. If you want to capture images with a shallow depth of field you'll have to opt for a camera with a larger sensor or wait on Samsung to release faster glass for the NX Mini system; a 17mm f/ 46mm equivalent is scheduled for release next month. The NX Mini's slim body limits the amount of controls that Samsung can incorporate. There's no physical mode dial; instead you'll only find the shutter release, power button, and a Wi-Fi button on the top plate. The rear control houses a movie record button integrated into the thumb rest, along with Menu, Mode, playback, and delete buttons below. At their center are four directional controls with a center OK button. Three of these are standardâDisplay, AF, and Driveâbut the bottom position requires a little explaining. It toggles between the bottom row of on-screen shooting settings shutter speed, aperture, exposure value compensation, and ISO. It highlights the active control in blue, allowing you to use the left and right directional buttons to adjust it. This would typically be assigned to a control dial, but the NX Mini doesn't have one. The control system on its own is a little frustrating, especially to photographers are used to loads of button and dials, even on compact mirrorless bodies. It's almost a necessity to use the touch-screen display to supplement the buttons. You can tap the rear display to change the focus point, access the Wi-Fi menu, launch the main menu, and launch the Fn overlay. There's no physical Fn button, but it's a handy screen if you like to adjust settings. From there you have direct touch control over the shutter speed, aperture, EV compensation setting, ISO, white balance, autofocus mode and area, metering pattern, drive mode, flash output, face detection settings, and what Samsung calls the Picture Wizard, which gives you control over the colors and tone of images. Despite the addition of touch controls, the NX Mini is going to leave serious photographers frustrated with the difficulty of adjusting settings. Even though the NX Mini is capable of Raw shooting, it's really designed with more automatic operation in mind. Samsung's approach is superior to the one that Nikon took with its 1 J3 at AmazonOpens in a new window mirrorless camera, which is scant on physical buttons, but lacks a touch screen, but a flat rear command dial like the one that Nikon put on the J3 would go a long way to improve the NX Mini's handling. The display itself is a 3-inch LCD with a 460k-dot resolution. It's not the sharpest in its class, and doesn't quite pack the punch of the 768k-dot OLED display that Samsung uses in the NX300$ at AmazonOpens in a new window, but it's perfectly adequate for image framing and review. Its touch input is as good as a smartphone; you can pinch images to zoom in and check for focus or peek at a small detail, and you can swipe through photos when in playback mode. Samsung is the class leader when it comes to in-camera Wi-Fi, and the NX Mini is no exception. It can pair with a phone or tablet via NFC or a standard Wi-Fi connection, so you can copy images and videos over using the free Samsung Smart Camera app for iOS and Android. There's also a Remote Viewfinder function, which allows you to take full control over the NX Mini via your handheld device, with full manual shooting controls available. And, when connected to a hotspot or home Wi-Fi, you can post images directly to Facebook, Flickr, Picasa, or Dropbox, or send them via email. The only real limitation to instant sharing is the lack of support for Raw imagesâyou'll need to shoot in JPG or Raw+JPG in order to share them via Wi-Fi; in-camera Raw processing is not available. If you do opt to shoot in Raw+JPG, you may run into a minor bugâthe timestamp on Raw files is five hours ahead when shooting both formats simultaneously. Oddly enough, it's correct when shooting Raw images on their own. Performance and ConclusionsPerformance and ConclusionsThe NX Mini starts and grabs an in-focus photo in about 3 seconds, which is on the slow side. Its autofocus system is quick in bright light, locking on in but it slows to about in dim light. It can capture a burst of up to 30 JPG images at 10 frames per second, but drops to 6fps when shooting Raw and is limited to four shots before slowing down when shooting in that format. The Panasonic GM1 is quicker to start up, doing so in 1 second; it matches the NX Mini in focus speed in bright light, and is faster in dim conditions. The GM1 does lag behind in burst shooting It can capture JPG images continuously at just 5fps, and only manages to capture eight Raw images at before slowing down. I used ImatestOpens in a new window to check the sharpness of the included 9mm f/ lens. It betters the 1,800 lines per picture height that we require to call an image sharp at every tested aperture. At f/ it shows 2,080 lines on the center-weighted test, with good sharpness at all but the very edges of the frame, which record just 1,150 lines. Narrowing the aperture to f/4 shows very marginal improvement, but at f/ the average score 2,255 lines and edges 1,715 lines improve. Diffraction, which limits sharpness, sets in at f/8; the overall score drops to 2,095 lines here and edges show 1,625 lines. There's just a little bit of barrel distortion, percent, which gives images a very slightly noticeable outward curve. Imatest also checks photos for noise, which can add unwanted grain and detract from image quality when shooting at the high ISO settings required in dim light. When shooting in JPG, it keeps noise below percent though ISO 6400. Close examination of images from our ISO test scene on a calibrated NEC MultiSync PA271W$ at AmazonOpens in a new window display shows that detail here is quite rough. The NX Mini does its best to keep the ISO set to 3200 or lower when shooting in Auto mode, a setting at which detail still suffers. Things are better at ISO 1600âthe top setting at which the camera will default when shooting in Program, Aperture Priority, or Shutter Priorityâbut you'll get noticeably sharper images at ISO 800 and below. Despite having a larger image sensor, comparison of crops from test shots from the Panasonic GM1 with the NX Mini show that the Mini's higher-resolution sensor captures more detail at high ISO settings. Neither keeps pace with one of the best low-light mirrorless shooters we've seen, the APS-C Sony Alpha 6000. Video is recorded at 1080p30 quality in MP4 format. The footage is crisp and smooth, and the NX Mini is quick to change focus as the scene changes. My voice came over loud and clear on the soundtrack, and while there is a slight whirring noise as the lens adjusts its focus, it's not overwhelming. There's an expansion port on the top of the body, and the remainder of the ports are hidden by a flap on the side. There's a micro HDMI connector that plugs into an HDTV, a micro USB port it also charges the battery, and a micro SD card slot. The battery is big; if you lay it down on the faceplate it takes up all of the space from the edge to the lens mount. Samsung doesn't include an external charger, so if you do opt to purchase a spare you'll have to charge it internally or buy an external charger for it. The Samsung NX Mini is one of the smallest interchangeable lens cameras on the market, and one of the more affordable ones. It's built for sharing; Wi-Fi implementation is excellent and its small size encourages you to take it with you wherever you go. Image quality is quite good, rivaling 1-inch compacts like the pricey Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II$ at AmazonOpens in a new window, but serious shutterbugs will be turned off by the limited range of lenses that go hand-in-hand with a new system and a control layout that is best suited for automatic mode. The included prime lens is wide enough to fit you and a friend in a quick selfie, and if you're used to shooting with a smartphone camera you'll feel right at home with its non-zooming wide-angle field of view, but for another $100 you can opt for a kit with a zoom lens. The bigger lens cuts down on the pocket-friendly form factor, but by no means make the Mini a large camera. If you're a serious photographer and are looking for something small, but with a larger lens library, the Panasonic GM1 is your best betâbut it's $300 more expensive.
